Opportunity

Synchrotron is one of the gems of scientific research in the UK and their Oxfordshire campus ‘Diamond Light Source’ houses some of the worlds most advanced – and expensive – equipment and highest calibre scientists with new ground breaking discoveries being made daily. The building suffers from multiple water leaks and these have been subject to ongoing litigation for some time. One particular leak is over a hugely expensive and complex laboratory and for 12 years had been the subject or investigation and unsuccessful repair.

NACWL Proposal

Diamond Light Source needed to appoint a firm to fix the leak – and guarantee that it would not re-occur. A high risk proposal when this is a link extension between two buildings with a mix of Calzip, Curtain Walling, Kingspan, Hot melt roofing, aluminium copings, fixings for handrails and ballustrades as well as single ply membrane. With so many interfaces the pathways for ingress were numerous. With the expensive equipment below extensive water testing was just not an option. We carried out a desktop review of the original building, extension and historic remedials and formed a hypothesis about the most likely routes for water entry. After extensive works on site we handed back a leak free roof which has passed its 24 months defects liability period without further incident. All this for a guaranteed lump sum price.
